Standard / Apprentice Course Overview

The Standard Level Course is designed for guides who are relatively new to interpretive guiding who want, or need, a higher level of training than offered in the Basic course.

The Standard course is appropriate for any activity guides who wish to distinguish their services by providing a higher level of customer service in heritage interpretation.

It is designed as a “stepping stone” to the Professional Interpreter’s Level. In-course tests and activities are used to evaluate knowledge and skill.

Successful guides will receive a standard/apprentice certificate. To maintain an active certificate, an MPHIA membership must be purchased yearly.

Guides who require this level of training must provide proof of  STANDARD/Apprentice Level certification prior to receiving Guide Identification Cards from Parks Canada.

The following 2 Standard / Apprentice courses are available:

1. Central Canadian Rockies Region (covering Banff, Yoho & Kootenay National Parks)
2. North- Central Canadian Rockies Region (Covering Jasper National Park)
